Les Trois Petit Bouchons | Montreal
December 22, 2009
What
A bistro à vin or French wine bistro in Montreal.
Why
Modern and seasonal French menu with diverse natural and organic-focused wine list.
Consider
Unfortunately you cannot just pop in for a drink since it’s not just a wine bar. You will need to order food, but it could just be a cheese plate.
Les Trois Petits Bouchons which translates to “the three little corks” is a charming French wine bistro in the Plateau area in Montreal. Subterranean location, stone walls, and a long blonde wood bar add up to a warm and modern feel. A large chalkboard surrounds the pass-through kitchen window listing the daily wine and food specials.
The three corks refers to the three owners: Audrey Dufresne, Xavier Burini and Michel Charette, who opened the bistro three years ago. Audrey is the chef and Michel and Xavier run the front of the house.
Drink
Order a glass or a bottle of wine and you will witness their commitment to perfection. They personally do a taste test to make sure you won’t get a glass or bottle that’s been corked or turned.
The diverse and extensive list includes small production, naturally-focused wines from all over the world, but with an emphasis on France. This list will get any natural wine geek excited.
Eat
Their menu changes seasonally and is inspired from the South of France with quality ingredients from the Quebec countryside.
You can order as a little as a cheese plate or a tartine or go more hearty with a stew. The selections always change, but to give you an idea of what they serve, they have homemade terrines and mousses, charcuterie plates, riz de veau, and grilled octopus.
We stopped in for a quick glass of wine and ordered the Jo Landron 2008 Muscadet Amphibolite by the glass and a mixed mushroom tartine. The mushroom tartine was rich and earthy, made with a mixture of 3 or 4 different kinds of organic mushrooms on toast in a wine reduction sauce. It was superb.
Details
The dining room is small, probably about 20/25 seats, with a few tables in the front of restaurant and six spots at the bar. We recommend making a reservation ahead of time.
This is the kind of neighborhood place that you will never tire of, since the menu and wine list are constantly evolving and changing with each season.
