This Friday, bar stars from around the world gather in New York City for the Manhattan Cocktail Classic. It’s a five-day event that is a mixture of industry seminars, tastings, cocktail parties and lots of imbibing. The event kicks off on Friday night with a gala ball held at the New York Public Library and ends on Tuesday.
While there won’t be a shortage of spirits poured, it’s always nice to check out the local talent around the city. Here is a guide to cocktail bars recommended by a selection of top bartenders in New York City.

“They are a very unique bar. I love to order the Americano on tap. On Saturdays and Sundays they do a coffee and alcohol brunchy type thing.”
“It’s a bitters bar and they don’t use any juices. It’s just all stirred drinks. They also serve vermouth on tap.”

“It’s a great neighborhood vibe bar that happens to have a serious cocktail program. They make great drinks, also play around a lot and do some spirit phosphate drinks.”

“Variety is what makes cocktails special.”
“Make the pilgrimage to visit Toby Cecchini. It feels like it's been there forever. With Phil Ward and Katie Stipe pulling shifts there, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to drink.”

“A very comfortable and cozy bar. It’s not too loud and you can have a decent discussion with a great cocktail.”
“A gorgeous bar in a meticulously restored diner with Art Deco flourishes. Unpretentious, comfortable, and manned by expert bartenders. This bar deserves to be on everyone’s short list.”

“A super cool spot. They make cocktails using vermouth and other fortified wines, as well as beer cocktails. All very refreshing and meant to be enjoyed with cured, smoked and tinned seafood.”

“An amazing concept and a beautiful space to boot. If you score yourself a seat in the back during a summer’s night and an Absinthe Pina Colada and some oysters, you’re in a good place.”

“Leo Robitschek is a great guy and does such a phenomenal job. He’s been able to get wonderful recognition as a bartender at a restaurant bar.”

Raines Law Room
“This was the bar where I fell in love with cocktails. I had this complete revelation that drinks can be so good. It’s also one of the most beautiful rooms in New York.”
Theo Lieberman
of Milk & Honey
“It has such a unique feel for a bar. It’s very cool. I like that you are sequestered away from the bar and don’t have to stare at a lot of bottles.”

“It’s a cocktail bar and kind of a dive bar. It smells like a distillery, because it is a distillery. You can order an impeccable martini and turn around and see the alembic still that the gin was distilled in.”
“A great cocktail bar with a great vibe that is very relaxed and unpretentious. The bartenders are just incredibly talented and really nice.”
“When I come this bar I genuinely feel like I’m in New Orleans. They are trying to capture the same spirit that we are with the past.”
