This week, the guys behind the cocktail bar Experimental Cocktail Club in the Lower East Side opened the third outpost of their wine bar La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels in Soho. Their first two wine bars are in Paris and London. The New York version has a loungy feel, nearly 600 wines on the list and offers small plate dishes from chefs Armand Arnal of the La Chassagnette and Tibor Kogler of Telepan.
Romée de Goriainoff, Olivier Bon and Pierre-Charles Cros own several wine bars, cocktail lounges and restaurants in New York, Paris, London and Ibiza. But it was a thriving cocktail scene in New York City, years ago, that sparked their interest and sent them on their way.
When Romée de Goriainoff and Pierre-Charles Cros were college students in Montreal, they would take weekend road trips to New York to check out cocktails being made by such luminaries as Dale DeGroff, Sasha Petraske at Milk & Honey, and Julie Reiner at Flatiron Lounge.

The success of the Experimental Cocktail Club led to the opening of Curio Parlor and Prescription Cocktail Club, also in Paris. Today, the Experimental Group owns ten different places of their own and have inspired countless others. “Every single one of our employees when they left us opened a cocktail bar. Now there are like twenty cocktail bars in Paris. Every two weeks, there is a new cocktail bar opening up.”

So why venture into wine? “The existing wine places were either like a restaurant or had a very traditional and conservative way of doing wine and they were very masculine. We wanted to do something more feminine and more elegant, making the wine more funky and more adapted to people who are 25 to 50 years old.”
Next up for the Experimental Group is a boutique hotel on rue Victor Massé in the South Pigalle area (SoPi). The hotel is slated to open in September and will have a restaurant and bar.

I love the wine list here with a great selection of German and French Loire, but almost no American wines, which is a big statement.

One of the most impressive wine lists in New York. It can be noisy, but the wine is amazing.

Amazing food and cocktails. The food is very simple and it's all about the produce. You get things like cured meats, a cheese board, chorizo, goat cheese and cured white fish. It is all small dishes, so it is easy to share.

The oysters here are so fresh and they have sea urchin from both the East and West Coast, so you can try both. I love the cocktails here too.
