If you find yourself traveling in Western Pennsylvania near Gettysburg, Harrisburg and the Maryland border, seek out Crabbs Tropical Treat. Founded in 1953, generations of families still line up at this old school drive-in for classic American diner food, but especially the Fat Boy - made with two beef patties, melted cheese, pickles, lettuce, onions and a special pink sauce.
Chef Andrew Little, formerly of the Sheppard Mansion in Hanover, now at Josephine in Nashville, passes along this recommendation as a place worth going out of the way to try.
“It’s an amazing drive-in that is only open from mid-March until the early fall. Once March comes rolling around, I start to crave the opening of ‘The Treat’ and my first Fat Boy of the year. The Fat Boy is a sandwich that I would describe as the Big Mac’s much better tasting cousin.”
