For souvlaki -- they capture Mykonos magic in a bottle.
The corner of Stanton and Essex may not evoke feelings of the Greek Islands, but Souvlaki GR offers New Yorkers an authentic taste of the Mediterranean.
This small sandwich shop with a whitewashed exterior, Aegean blue shutters and a cobblestone floor, is like walking onto a Hollywood set. If you ignore the sounds of honking horns of yellow cabs, you may actually feel like you’re in Mykonos.
Souvlaki GR started as a food truck and their small menu still reflects the limited selection, with inexpensive prices. This makes choosing your meal all the more easier. Aside from the souvlaki sandwiches, they have a “Pikilia” for two, with humus, tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber purée) taramousalata (fish roe whipped with lemon, potatoes and olive oil), melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant purée), Kalamata olives, warm pita and hand-cut French fries topped with oregano.
Check out their newsstand with Greek newspapers, magazines and chocolates.
