Fine + Raw

“They’re great, complex and not very sweet, which is nice when you’re used to basically being on a sugar high 24/7. They have a raspberry bar that I love. They now have a retail space!”

Pralus Barre Infernale

“For the Pralus Barre Infernale. It’s a massive brick with milk or dark chocolate on the outside and really unbelievable rich and smooth praliné (hazelnut paste) and whole roasted hazelnuts inside. It'll last you ages. It's flavorful, delicate and not too sweet. Worth every penny.”

Roni-Sue’s

“She always coming up with new stuff - it's really incredible. She's got baked goods, pie and cake-inspired truffles, a sugar-free line, it's like she never stops! She has a sense of humor that's inherent in her products, which can get lost sometimes in the stress of running a food business or getting caught up in the scene, but she finds a lot of joy in it, which I think is underestimated a lot of the time.”

Nunu Chocolates

“Nunu's salt caramels are fantastic, and I'm allowed to say that because they're dipped in chocolate (ours are not).”

Liz Gutman and Jen King debuted their artisanal candy company, Liddabit Sweets at the Brooklyn Flea in April 2009, after meeting at the French Culinary Institute while completing the Pastry Arts diploma. Four years later, their handmade candies can be found in various food boutiques around the country, in Whole Foods and in the mini-bars at places like the NoMad and W Hotels. You can also still visit them at the Brooklyn Flea.

If they’re not sold anywhere near you, you can shop their online store. Look for luscious candy bars like the Pecan Pie Bar with pecan dulce de leche and bourbon ganache; Sea Salt Caramels, Honeycomb Candy, Maple Lollipops and Bourbon-Bacon Caramel Corn.

We asked candy maker Liz Gutman to pass along some some of her favorite chocolate companies. Here are 5 that might make Cupid happy on a certain mid-February Hallmark holiday.
