Bartender’s Rec | The Gentleman’s Companion
“I really have been around the world three times...besides sailing on my own deep water ketch. I’ve done quite a bit of hunting and fishing in odd spots. There’s no nature-faking in any of this material.”
- Author Charles H. Baker Jr.
Charles Baker married rich and traveled well. He met his future wife on a cruise and together they traveled the world. The Gentleman’s Companion chronicles his globetrotting lifestyle in two volumes, the first about cooking and the second about drinking. The book was first published in 1939 with a second edition released in 1946.
While Baker’s writings make him an all star armchair travel guide, his drink recipes are thought to need some work. Regardless, bartenders like Thad Vogler of Bar Agricole and Erik Adkins, of the Slanted Door and Heaven’s Gate in San Francisco devote their menus to Baker.
“Gentleman's Companion is an emotional favorite of mine. Part travelogue, part recipe book, part bon vivant, it’s a snap shot of drinking around the world.”
- Bartender Erik Adkins
