Gourmet Market

Find | Shops & Markets - Miami, FL

It’s a standard on Miami Beach, being around for so many years, but I will tell you they have amazing grab-and-go. You can get a bunch of stone crabs and take them to eat al fresco and they have great bottles of cold wine to go too.

Latin American

It’s really a quintessential South American pastry shop. They do some savory things, like great empanadas. It’s a family business and the kids have taken it over. The kids are in their mid-twenties and they’re like Harvard-educated, culinary-trained pastry chefs, but they’re keeping the same traditions as their parents and their grandparents and it’s just wonderful. Overly sweet, incredibly delicious and it feels so old school and homey. It’s as I imagine what it would be like being in Venezuela in the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Eat | Restaurants - Miami, FL

It feels like a real throwback. It’s really a greasy spoon, but it has a lot of fun things about it. I really like their chicken a la plancha or steak a la plancha, grilled beef or grilled chicken, and they serve it really plain with just a piece of the wedge of lemon. Their Ropa Vieja is amazing. I try not to eat Cuban food so much, just for the calories alone I’ll get my cardiologist going. But what wonderful food, really simple and really consistent.

Sam Gorenstein is an adorable chef who is really just unbelievable. He’s from Colombia and he has this tiny little storefront that sells the best ceviche you’re ever going to find in the world and great stone crabs. And at this time of the year, you’ve got to eat your body’s weight worth of stone crabs!

Drink | Coffee - Miami, FL

Panther is a local roaster that Joel and Leticia Pollock opened about a year and a half ago in Wynwood. It’s heaven for coffee lovers. We want to keep it a secret because it’s our little place, but it’s blowing up. It’s a great little find. They have great little vegan desserts, wonderful coffee, and a perfect place to see artists from all over.

Cuban

You can get tostones (fried green plantains) and you can get their tostada, which is griddled bread that they slather with margarine, instead of butter. Then they press it, so it’s really crispy. They also have guava and cheese pastelitos, which are really sweet. Get it with a milky café con leche and it’s a perfect midmorning snack.
