When I am really crampy, I break down and eat a huge bloody steak (most of the time I eat vegan). I love it here. And it's one of those classy places that actually has decent perfume (Hermes!) in the ladies bathroom.

I get coffee and cheong fun here in the morning sometimes. At 8am, I might be the only sober person in here. It's straight out of Twin Peaks, but totally Chinese. Just an old funky diner doing what it does well.

Tofu factory on Henry Street, just west of Market - best Chinese tofu I have ever had. The texture is buttery smooth, it's very fresh, and it's about $1 for a big tub. This place has great cheong fun made to order while you wait, too.

I buy tea eggs (3 for $1) and these amazing vegetarian bok choy burgers ($1.25) here. I've been coming here for a long time and they are still as mean to me as ever, which in way is sort of charming.

I eat the Nasi Lemak here so much it's kind of embarrassing. But it's really great, and the people that work here are very sweet.

My neighborhood spot. I like to drink scotch here late at night with friends. Downstairs feels like a medieval dungeon, but the kind that I wouldn't mind getting locked up in.

My most favorite diner. It's an old gas station on the side of the highway with pancakes as big as small children. Fluffy the whole way through!

They serve up lots of old school European desserts and great coffee. When I was living in Seattle and feeling down I'd sit here and stare out the window, eating cake, feeling hopeful.

THE PENINSULA HOTEL
The Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Tsa Tsui, Hong Kong for high tea. I spent a lot of my youth in Hong Kong and I love hotels. High tea at the Peninsula is my gold standard for high tea anywhere.
