After The Beach | Bar Veloso

“The Brazilian boteca in Rio is where the center of gravity is and you head here more for the appetizers, called Petiscos. It’s always a good place to go after the beach. Order a beer and some Mandioca (fried yucco root), which is fried and a little bit unhealthy.”

Neighborhood Joint | Jobi

“It’s a Brazilian boteco in the Leblon neighborhood. A boteco is a casual neighborhood restaurant. Jobi is kind of divey café-like, but with white tablecloths and so much great food. They serve family style and have some great beer on draft. They have specials on a chalkboard.

Their Feijoada is excellent. I also enjoy the simple cuts of chicken and meat, such as a Picanha, served on a Na Chapa (a very hot metal plate) along with all the accoutrements  of rice and beans. The meats are cooked on the Na Chapa over the broiler. They also serve it with Farofa, which is a manoic type flour toasted with butter along with bananas, garlic and onion. Another great rice and beans dish is the Arroz Tropeiro (rice and Trooper’s beans).”

Mineiro Food | Restaurante Aprazível

“This place is really fantastic. It’s like being in the clouds, located on top of Santa Teresa mountain, right behind the Cristo Redentore mountain. The restaurant is built into the hillside and you have an unbelievable view. You’re in the rainforest with monkeys in the trees. The food is incredible too. They serve Mineiro food, meaning food from the state of Minas Gerais.

I was mesmerized by a dish made with Palmito, the heart of palm. Fresh heart of palm is served in the palm casting or the stalk fresh from the wood burning oven with just extra virgin olive oil. It’s outrageous.”

Fine Dining | Olympe Restaurante

“The chef is Claude Troisgros from the Troisgros family in France. He married a Brazilian and moved to Rio. He has a few restaurants in Rio and Olympe is fine dining French-Brazilian, which is French cooking with Brazilian ingredients and influences. It’s fantastic. He has a ravioli dish with cheese and truffle oil that is out of this world. The cheese is Minas, which is a light farmer cheese.”

A Leblon Caipirinha | The Chopp de Tangerina at Bar d’Hotel

Caipirinhas | Bar d’Hôtel

“For a Caipirinha, I always come here. It’s on the second floor of the Marina All Suites Hotel in the Marina in Leblon. Santiago, one of the bartenders, makes great Caipirinhas, but he also makes this one drink in particular, called the Chopp de Tangerina. Chopp actually means draft beer in Portuguese, but this isn’t a draft beer, it’s a cocktail that looks like a draft beer. It has a tangerine juice base, with Leblon cachaça, a foam on top that looks like beer foam, and it’s served in a beer glass. It’s a complex, high-quality, tangerine fruit cocktail. They also serve great food here too.”
