Home/Made is like going to a cool friend’s apartment for a dinner party or brunch, but there is no pressure to mingle. However, with the stylish crowd that comes in, you may want to. Comfy couches, cocktail tables and an open kitchen create a homey atmosphere.
Chef Monica Byrne and metal artist Leisah Swenson opened Home/Made this past spring, after operating Tini Wine Bar down the street. The previous spot was half-catering/half retail shop. When they relocated, they decided to lose the retail part.
Brunch is a mainstay for Home/Made and like their name implies, they try to source their ingredients as close to home as possible. They get their eggs from the Red Hook Poultry Association, their produce mainly from local greenmarkets, like Union Square, and Added Value, a non-profit organization promoting the sustainable development of Red Hook.
If your brunch leads later into the afternoon or the evening and the urge for wine takes over, you’re in luck. They have a large selection of wines by the glass (over 30) and by the bottle, with an emphasis on organic producers. To pair with the wines, choose from olives, cheese, charcuterie, salads, panini, bruschetta, or flatbreads. Sooner or later, you’ll have to leave, but there are many reasons to just hang-out and lounge.
In addition to the restaurant, you can catch the Home/Made duo at their New Amsterdam Market stall, where they sell everything from dried fruit compote, to chocolate truffles with locally sourced cream and butter, to marinated goat cheese in herb oil.
